Who can form a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF)?
An HUF can only be formed by a family. It cannot be created by an individual. Furthermore, only Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Sikhs are legally allowed to form an HUF in India.
The Karta is typically the eldest male (or female, following the 2005 amendment) member of the family. The Karta acts as the head of the HUF and has the authority to manage its affairs and finances.
An HUF is treated as a separate legal entity by the Income Tax Department. This means the HUF gets its own separate basic tax exemption limit (e.g., β‚Ή2.5/β‚Ή3 Lakhs) and can claim deductions under Section 80C and others independently from its members.
